Winter Warmth: Heat, insulation, draughts and how a heat pump moves warmth from cold outdoor air.

Winter Warmth · Day 1 of 7 · Child · 0 complete

Heat detectives

Does cold come in, or does heat go out?

Did you know?

Mini Max has a secret: cold never sneaks in. It is warmth that sneaks out!

Today you will

  • Know that heat moves from warm to cold
  • Find one draughty gap

Key words

Heat:
Energy that moves from warmer things to cooler things.
Draught:
Air sneaking through gaps, carrying warmth away.

Experiment: The draught detector

You will need

  • A strip of tissue paper or a light feather
  • Sticky tape
  • A pencil
  • Sticky notes

Steps

  1. Tape a tissue strip to the end of a pencil to make a draught detector.
  2. Hold it still near the bottom of a door, a letterbox and a window edge.
  3. Watch the tissue. If it wiggles, you have found a draught.
  4. Put a sticky note on every draughty spot.

What you'll see: The tissue flutters near gaps, even when the door is shut.

Why it works: Air moves through tiny gaps and carries warmth from inside to outside.

Make it bigger: Draw a map of your home and mark the draughty spots with a blue crayon.

Grown-up safety check

  • Stay on the floor. No climbing to reach windows.
  • Keep away from open fires and heaters.

Which way does heat move?

Talk together: Which spot was the draughtiest? Why do you think that is?

Habit to keep: Close internal doors to keep warmth in the rooms you use.

Safety rules for every quest
  • Never use mains electricity, plug sockets, extension leads or anything plugged in for an experiment.
  • Never use lithium cells, button or coin batteries, car batteries, or any battery that is warm, swollen or leaking. Button batteries can cause serious harm if swallowed.
  • Use no more than two AA or AAA batteries. Connect wires for a few seconds only, because a short circuit makes wires and batteries hot.
  • A grown-up supervises every activity and does any step involving hot water, sharp tools or batteries for younger children.
  • Use warm tap water only, never boiling water. No climbing, roofs, loft hatches or meters inside high or locked cupboards.
  • Never look directly at the Sun, even through a pinhole viewer, card or sunglasses.
  • Do not photograph or share bills, account numbers, faces or addresses. Share a sentence or drawing only.
  • Wash hands after handling coins, nails, lemons or potatoes, and do not eat food used in an experiment.
  • Stop straight away if anything gets hot, smells, sparks or someone feels unsure. Asking for help is always the right answer.

Privacy note: progress stays on this device, saved separately for each season and age. If a grown-up shares a drawing or learning sentence, leave out faces, addresses, bills, account numbers and other personal details.
